Alma Mater Royal Arch Chapter No 1644

posted on 10 January 2017

Our newly exalted Companion, Companion Gary Ross, the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent and the Chapter Principals

The January Convocation of Alma Mater Royal Arch Chapter No 1644 encapsulated much in the life of a Chapter including a eulogy for a much loved member, the Presentation of a Supreme Grand Chapter Certificate, an outstanding Exaltation ceremony and last but not least a decision agreed to move home from the Apollo Hotel to the Yenton Assembly Rooms. All this witnessed by our Most Excellent Grand Superintendent E Comp Philip Hall who was present to support the Exaltee.

The eulogy delivered by E Comp Allan Nelmes, PProvGSN, for his own father, E Comp Stanley Nelmes, CM, P.Prov.G.S.N. who died at the age of 95 reflected a truly remarkable life as a childhood friend of Harry Secombe through to a career as a highly successful chemist. His life in Freemasonry was fascinating starting with an invite from his future wife Margaret to a Ladies Night where her father had a spare ticket and when Stanley was her boss. When he subsequently joined the Duke of Edinburgh Lodge no 1182 in 1947 it had 250 members and it would have taken Stanley 17 years just to reach the Stewards Bench. Times have changed that Lodge unfortunately surrendered its warrant in 1997!

The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent was then asked to present a Supreme Grand Chapter Certificate to Comp Tom Buxton Snr which he took great pleasure in delivering.

Then followed the exaltation of Comp Gary Ross. The work was outstanding, led by MEZ E Comp Dr Ronald Foster and once more E Comp Allan Nelmes being fully involved by delivering the Mystical Lecture in excellent fashion.

A warm welcome from all in the province to Comp Gary Ross and the Chapter looks forward to welcoming another new Companion in September.
